5:27 pm - Help this little amateur translator!!

I'm making subtitles for J.K. Rowling A Year In The Life (by the way - it's brilliant!! Go watch!!)

There are some sentences that I really can't understand, so I was wondering if some of you could take some minutes to try and figure out what the hell she's saying :(

Pleeeease!!

6:54 pm - Translators CAN write :)
My first long and plotty fic was finished on Thursday. SUCH a hard work, and the result wasn't completely satisfying for me. Anyway, it received enthusiastic feedback and this makes me so very happy *_*!

Since I haven't been reading anything during the last week, it would be great if you could point me to something good you read on HD_holidays or Merry Smutmas, or maybe a rec post?

I'm sure I'll have plenty of time to read after Chistmas!

ETA: I almost forgot! Check out the lovely essay by Carodee, So You Want To Write A Slash Sex Scene. It's a brilliant read!

11:41 am - I need help building a plot!
Any possible reason why Harry should be sent to the Muggle world to convince Malfoy - who's been living there for a while - to come back?

I think this one should get way more comments.

How Ron Weasley Learned to Tolerate Kimchi and Draco Malfoy by anon, Ron/Draco, R
Summary: The first thing Ron notices about Korea is the heat.

This fic contains three things that drive me crazy: a long title and a short summary, both very intriguing, and an exotic, well written setting. Why should Ron Weasley be in Korea, and why should he meet Draco Malfoy, who looks like a girl and is not uncomfortable about living with Muggles? Most of all, why should he wander the streets with Malfoy? And is it really the weather that makes him feel so hot?
This author gave a dry, seducing answer to each question above, managing to paint a languid atmosphere in a few lines since the very beginning. A very enjoyable story, made me feel as if I were in Seoul!

Quote: "Shut up, Weasley," Malfoy says dismissively, climbing to his feet. He doesn't offer Ron a hand. "Let's get out of here."
They catch a taxi and Malfoy gives the driver an address that Ron doesn't recognize. It's 11:30pm now and whatever's on the radio is terrible and Malfoy is different. And maybe Ron is, too.

It's about time I started cross posting here at IJ.

One of the reasons why I love Merry Smutmas is that it gets me to read new/minor pairings. Such as these:

A Sigh, A Cry, A Hungry Kiss by anon, Lucius/Sirius, NC-17
Summary: Sirius finds an engagement party to be less of an ordeal than he might have expected.

My inner top!gayman approves of fics like this one, which feature cheeky and sexy bottoms who never know when to shut up. Not that Sirius' words aren't exciting in this, so much so that they affect James' morality by forcing him to testify more than he should. I love the pace of this fic, the dialogs between our beloved Marauders and the sex, of course, with a hot, bossy and arrogant Lucius. If you like the Marauders and if you like hot, immoral sexual encounters, this one's not to be missed!

Quote: "You're much more tolerable when you're silent," said Lucius, moving swiftly up behind him, speaking close to his ear. "Blacks should be seen and not heard."
"Shall I share that sentiment with my cousin?" said Sirius. "I'm sure she'll find it fascinating."

Coming Clean by anon, Teddy/James Jr., NC-17
Summary: Teddy thinks it's time that James fesses up to his parents, but it might take a bit of persuasion on his part.

Ok, it was damn hard to decide which part to quote, and this proves just how beautiful and perfect this story is from the first word to the last. The plot is simple: Teddy would like James to tell his parents about them, but he can't force him to. What he can do is show him how much he loves and wants him, so that James feels ready and confident about it, and GOD, does he show him! I'm aware that I should enrich my feedback vocabulary, but I can't find other words to describe the sex in this, except sweet and perfect. I love how Teddy's being shaped as a confident, fascinating young man by the fandom (see this amazing anonymous Teddy/James fanart!). I've always liked Remus, and Teddy seems to me like the rebel version of his father. I'm sure you'll all like this story, so go read it and let the author know how good it is :)

Quote: And he thought it'd been a fluke, that maybe Teddy was just having a bit of fun, especially when he ended up in the front bushes, his trousers to his knees and come all over both their hands.
But here they were, a year later, and Teddy still looked at him like he'd like nothing more than to find the nearest bush anytime he was around. It was heady; no one had ever looked at him like that before. And for it to be Teddy…
He knew he was hurting him by not telling his parents, by not allowing Teddy to tell them, but he was scared.

6:09 pm - Love's why we do it - The gratuitous joy of translating fan fiction
I’m an amateur translator. I’ve translated more than 20 stories in the last two years, always trying to improve my style and with the only aim of spreading the love for stories I particularly like.
I’ve noticed that translation’s not exactly at the top of the fandom’s agenda, and sometimes it seems to me that there’s an actual rift between the Anglophone fandom and the other ones, even if I know that there are many non-Anglophone readers that translate their favourite fics just like I do.
This is why I’d like to talk about what I do and how I do it. I hope this will result in people stopping thinking about translation as something boring and about fics translation as something boring and useless, a waste of time.
